Innovation is a complex process that requires multiple ingredients to succeed. This includes intrinsic talent, subject matter expertise, broad technical knowledge, motivation, analytical thinking, skills in TRIZ-based methods for systematic innovation, and creative imagination. Creative imagination is the ability to create something new through inventive thinking, which is a combination of logical and intuitive thinking.
Logical thinking, based on perceived rules, algorithms, judgments, and deductive inferences, is well-studied and forms the basis of many innovation tools, including those in TRIZ. However, intuitive thinking and imagination were commonly overlooked in the past. TRIZ aims to substitute pure creation with a kind of craft, using tools that allow inventors to reformulate problems and build a portrait of the ideal solution.
Intuitive thinking and creative imagination play three essential roles in the invention creation process. Firstly, imagination helps overcome gaps in logic and switch from a general hint suggested by logical tools to specific ideas for solutions. Secondly, imagination enables inventors to overcome psychological inertia barriers and understand what is important in the initial situation. Lastly, imagination helps inventors not to be afraid of non-trivial and unconventional solutions.
TRIZ replaces non-reliable sub-conscious mechanisms of intuition with tools that help inventors generate specific solutions. Imagination complements logical thinking and is essential in the invention creation process. As Genrikh Altshuller, the founder of TRIZ, used to say, "imagination for an inventor is like a courage for a soldier." Understanding the roles of creative imagination in innovation is vital to create successful and innovative solutions.
